Brooklyn Flea Revisited

The first day of the Brooklyn Flea was covered by the New York Times and was on the front page of the Style section as well as on the home page of nyt.com! Over 20,000 people showed up that first chilly Sunday.

Nest in Action

I recently started supporting Nest through sales of my Mother of Pearl necklace (see recent post here). It’s great to know about where that money is going — here is one of their most recent recipients of a micro loan:

Manal abu Karen

I am 32 years old and live in Lakiya, Israel since birth. I love my home because of my family, friends, flowers, trees and gardens. It gives me security and love.

I am married with 5 children- 11, 10, 9, 4, and 1 years old. My husband’s parents died. My uncles and aunts from both sides, brothers, sisters, and grandmother all live in Lakiya. I see them once a week or every other week. My family is special: my daughter is the best in her class, with the highest grades. My other children are also very good students. all of the people in my family are beautiful and nice.

If I receive a loan from Nest, I will be able to buy materials in order to make my jewelry. I am not able to do so without help. For example, now I can only buy a few stones at a time since I don’t have enough cash flow to make bigger purchases. If I receive a loan, I will be able to buy bigger supplies which will last me for two months and the purchase price will be better than I pay now.

My dreams are to send my children to a better school than the ones we have in Lakiya. Also to be more independent in my profession, to succeed in selling my jewelry abroad. A nest loan will help me begin a path to these dreams.

Aiko Designs in the Press!

I’m excited to say that Aiko Designs has made its way into a magazine! You’ll find one of my necklaces and bracelets in the fashion section of the current issue of Audrey Magazine. Audrey is a fashion and lifestyle magazine for Asian American women. Audrey Magazine is distributed at Borders Books, Barnes & Noble, B. Dalton, Tower Records & Magazines and at independent bookstores and newsstands across the country.

The necklace you see above is a sliced druzy geode that is plated in 24kt gold. For specifics (or a better image!) of this necklace, please get in touch!

AshaVeza

I was wandering around Park Slope in Brooklyn last weekend and was feeling just a little dismayed that a lot of what I was seeing could also be found in San Francisco. Luckily, I ran across AshaVeza. After carefully looking at the clothing — meticulous yet subtle detailed work — I found out that the clothing was being made in India and Bosnia (!!) by women who survived or are at risk of various forms of exploitation and poverty.

I’m all about social justice, and when it involves women and fashion, that’s just perfect! I bought a beautiful red cashmere and silk coat that I will hold onto forever. The clothing is intricate while still feminine and wearable.

Buy Art at the Source

Mission Open Studios is coming up in a few weeks. My studio is smack dab in the middle of a bunch of other great art studios here in San Francisco. It’s inspiring to be around so many people who are creating great art. Here are a few that will be showing and selling their work April 25th through 27th.

Meri Page

Meri is my studio-mate. We have a wonderful glass-enclosed space that gets amazing natural light. Perfect for her as she is a stained glass designer. This is one of her newer designs. Isn’t it fantastic??!!

Lisa Chou

Lisa’s beautiful layers of shapes painted with watercolor (crazy!) are absolutely gorgeous. I got a small painting at a past open studios and am planning on getting more at this next one. She has a range of sizes to fit your whole wall or miniature-sized paintings, which I love. See her work here.

Amelia Sosa

Amelia has a jewelry line called Zingaro. Her designs are beautiful and she is a sweetheart. Amelia is back at our studios after being away for a bit — we’re happy that she’s back.

Eve Shen

Eve’s work is a combination of nature, fantasy and fun. I love her theme park painting of an empty roller coaster with a storm brewing in the background. Check out her work.

See my previous post on more details on Mission Open Studios.
