EqliQli show in Tokyo

Happy New Year! I’m back from a month-long trip to Japan feeling inspired and excited about 2008. I know the recent news about the economy has many feeling a bit nervous, but I am feeling optimistic about the new year.
In December I did a show at a gallery/boutique in Tokyo called EqliQli. EqliQli is a jewelry boutique in Naka-Meguro, a small and hip neighborhood in Tokyo that is becoming known for its artists and entrepreneurs. Two other artists participated in the show — Tommy (Tomi) of Rukus and KATZENā TASCHE by a Japanese woman who goes by the name of Olga.
Tommy designs jewelry for both men and woman and he uses various antiquities (antique Japanese coins mostly), leather cord, precious/semi-precious stones and other precious materials that he sources. Rukus pieces can be described as “spiritual jewelry”.
Olga’s jewelry has a vintage and ethnic feel to it. She uses some amazing and unique stones to create rings, earrings and bracelets that I believe are all one-of-a-kind pieces.
Each of us have very different aesthetics which helps when doing an event like this together. We were able to admire each others work and inspire each other in ways we probably hadn’t expected.
I had such a great time in Japan that I’m going back in May for another event called Design Festa — more info on that coming soon!
